Jockey Billy Lee followed up two Royal Ascot wins earlier this week with a Down Royal success for Pat Flynn today, landing the G Dunlop Electrical Handicap on the trainer’s own Surpass And Shine (100/30jf).

Lee had provided trainers Paddy Twomey and Henry De Bromhead with breakthrough first Royal Ascot wins in Tuesday’s Ascot Stakes and Wednesday’s Queen’s Vase respectively, with the championship-chaser returning to Down Royal’s two-day fixture today.

Holding Surpass And Shine up behind the leaders, Lee improved him to lead inside the final furlong, as the pair scored by a length from Cuban Grey .

Lee, who trails Colin Keane 38-31 in the early stages of the championship, reported “Surpass And Shine did it well, we went quick and I had a great position. He settled lovely and it was just whether I was going to get a good run then. I had to be patient for a few strides, the gap appeared and he went through it well.

"Pat (Flynn) was mulling over whether we go five or seven (furlongs), but I think he is better having the bit down in his mouth and letting him at it, so I advised five. He'll get six but is too sharp for seven.”

Regarding his Royal Ascot heroics, he added "it's been a good week. Everything went smooth with Ascending (Ascot Stakes) after the first furlong and it was great to provide Henry with his first Royal Ascot winner.

"It was also great to get Carmers (Queen’s Vase) over the line for Paddy because it shows how good a trainer he is."
