Ayr win puts Shortt on cloud nine Eighteen year old jockey Adam Shortt registered his first winner at Ayr yesterday when steering Co Antrim trainer Stuart Crawford's Comragh to win the opening racinguk.com/freetrial Maiden Hurdle. The son of Desert King, under his seven pounds claimer, was booked for second spot but was left in front by the final flight fall of clear leader Caledonia. Shortt, a brother to Donal McCain based Ronan Shortt, took full advantage of that mishap and in the end scored an eight lengths win Shortt today said "I had previously been beaten just a head in a race last March but you need luck on your side too! "I was told to be patient on him (Comragh) but Brian Hughes (Caledonia) had definitely slipped us." He added "I've been a professional for a year and could claim seven pounds off 9st10lbs every day of the week. I joined Stuart from Philip Rothwell's five weeks ago and that was my first ride for the yard."
