Backinabit justified support from some fancy prices when claiming the second division of the Clearwater Construction Handicap Hurdle at Wexford.

The Denis Hogan-trained gelding had been pulled up on his first outing for the yard at Sligo last month but returned a 10/1 shot this evening having been as big as 50/1 in the morning.

Daniel King sent his mount on turning for home in the two-mile-one contest and he was in control in the closing stages as he posted a three-and-a-quarter length win over Le Diablo

“Denis said he’d stay further. I was happy when something went on and we had that to aim at,” said King.

“I thought we went a nice even gallop in the whole way, and I didn’t want it to turn into a sprint, so I just let him roll into the straight.

“In fairness he put his head down and galloped to the line.

“The (first time) blinkers on helped him as well, I think.

“He’s a fine looking horse so hopefully now that he’s got his head in front he can build on it. He stays quite well so there are plenty of options for him.”
