Ban Rules Buick Out Of Derby Meeting William Buick is set to miss the two-day Epsom Derby meeting after being hit with a five-day ban for careless riding at York on Friday. The jockey was handed the suspension after steering Alqamar to victory for Godolphin and trainer Charlie Appleby in the 7IM Supports Cystic Fibrosis Care Handicap that concluded the three-day Dante Festival on the Knavesmire. His ban starts on Investec Oaks day (June 2) and carries on to Derby day and then June 5-7. One ride he could potentially lose would be Jack Hobbs in the Coronation Cup, as well as on one of Godolphin's runners in the premier Classic, possibly the Appleby-trained Bay Of Poets, who was third to Cracksman and Dante winner Permian in the Derby Trial at Epsom. He has the option to appeal to the British Horseracing Authority against the decision of the York stewards. For bans of up to four days, jockeys can postpone the days when it clashes with Group One races but for bans over five days they do not have that option. A BHA spokesman said: "Following a stewards' inquiry on course, William Buick was found in breach of Rule (B)54.1 in relation to careless riding, and suspended for five days. "For suspensions over four days, there is no provision under the rules for riders to postpone a ban to avoid it falling on days when there are Group One races. "Mr Buick has the ability to appeal to a disciplinary panel which acts independently of the BHA."
