Bell makes mark with Royal winner Sammy Jo Bell secured a landmark winner as she claimed the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Stayers aboard Royal Signaller. The 3lb claimer was a late call-up for the Girls team earlier in the week after Cathy Gannon was ruled out through injury and the young apprentice grasped the opportunity with both hands. Bell settled the Mick Appleby-trained Royal Signaller in third place as Teak set the early pace in company with Buckland and it was that trio that eventually fought out the finish as the rest of the field struggled to get into the race. McEvoy on Buckland appeared to have taken the initiative as he edged to the front but Bell produced her mount with a perfectly-timed run to seize the advantage and win by a length, with Teak a further half-length back in third. Bell said: "That was amazing. It's my first winner at Ascot (from four rides) and it's absolutely brilliant. "He travelled really well and travelled into the race great and picked up nicely. I'm over the moon." McEvoy's efforts on Buckland and that of Blake Shinn on Teak saw the Rest of the World team extend their lead to 40 points with Bell's performance putting the Girls next best on 27.
