Bertie points the way for McNamara

Leading amateur rider John Thomas McNamara got off the mark as a trainer at Rathcannon point to point in Limerick yesterday, steering his Bertie Milan to win the 5yo Geldings' Maiden.

McNamara, who was the first jockey to partner 500 point to point winners, himself partnered the son of Milan to a half length win over Next Exit.

Croom, Co Limerick based McNamara subsequently mentioned "Bertie Milan is a nice horse and is improving all the time. He'll make a nice staying horse in time and is very tough."

He added "I mainly pre-train and break horses for people and Bertie Milan is my first runner, and only point to pointer, and I'm delighted to have had the winner!"

Bertie Milan is owned by hotelier Bryan Murphy, owner of the Dunraven Arms in Adare, and was providing McNamara with the first leg of a double, having subsequently partnered Outlaw Pete to win the Winners Of One for trainer Enda Bolger.
