Group 1-winning jockey Gary Carroll completed a Navan treble today, completing the feat on the Ger Lyons-trained Genchev (5/4) in the concluding Book Your Summer BBQ On June 7th Maiden.

Carrying the colours of David Spratt, Genchev was strongly pressed by sole market rival Reynir (5/6f) in the closing stages but held on well for a half-length success.

Carroll, who won last June’s Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot on Cercene, had earlier scored on Gavin Cromwell’s Barrow Bay and was giving trainer Lyons a double, having won on Howd’yadoit in an earlier handicap.

Regarding Carroll’s treble, Shane Lyons, brother and assistant to the winning trainer, stated “it is brilliant for Gary, who was very good on this horse. He made the running, but he was also saving a bit all the way, so it wasn't making it easy for Ben (Coen, on runner-up Reynir).

"He's a very good tactical rider, has a very good brain, and he's a brilliant judge.

"He has been with us years and never cried when he plays understudy to Colin (Keane). They are a good team and we have a good bunch of jockeys."

He added "Genchev ground it out so you'd like the way he did it and Gary was very complimentary of him. That ground suited him well and he answered every call. He gets that trip well and eventually will get further, but we don't have to go further just yet.

"He has very few races under his belt, so he's still learning. We'll see how he comes out of the race and take it from there.”
