The admirable Duke Of Leggagh brought up his fifth career success and will live long in the memory of jockey Terry Casey who rode his first winner on him in the apprentice handicap at Roscommon.

This was Duke Of Leggagh's first victory on 'good' ground, so he can no longer be classed as a mudlark.

He raced in second behind Stariam and Casey switched him out to challenge just over a furlong from home. Duke Of Leggagh picked that rival off at the furlong pole and galloped on well to beat a keeping-on Autocrat (16/1) by half a length. Stariam (10/1) dropped half a length further back in third.

Duke Of Leggagh won twice over hurdles in February and this was his third victory on the Flat.

Michael Mulvany said: “It’s lovely for the young fella. He’s after hitting the goalposts a number of times.

“He’s a year and a-half with us and is a good, hard-working lad.

“He came through the same academy as Wesley (Joyce) and I’m delighted for them. It’s a real Limerick success and hopefully it’s onwards and upwards.

“He’s improving all the time and is well worth his claim. It took Wesley a while to get going and hopefully we can get Terry going now as well with a few winners.

“He’s a good, genuine horse and an ideal horse for him. He’ll probably go back hurdling at some stage.”

Joyce, who rode a winner earlier on the card, was the first out into the parade ring to congratulate Casey.

Casey, from Southill in Limerick, said: “There is no better feeling than that. Michael has been very good to me, and I was second a few times recently. It’s great to ride a winner here today.

“I used to be watching Wesley on the telly and seeing how well he was doing, and that’s when I realised that I wanted to be just like him.

“Thanks to Michael for all the opportunities and it’s great to ride a winner on one of his.”
