After posting a runner-up in the opening race, Johnny Murtagh and Ben Coen went one better with Contrary To Law in the Guinness Handicap over an extended seven-furlongs at Roscommon.

La La Lucrative was nicely clear with two furlongs to go as Contrary To Law was looking for an out in fifth. He soon spied daylight and Coen got busy on board as he asked him to improve.

Push came to shove on La La Lucrative a furlong out as 7/2 favourite Contrary To Law really began to hit his stride in second. The pursuer reeled in the leader inside the final 150 yards and won going away by two and a quarter lengths.

La La Lucrative had to be content with second at 4/1 and he was three-lengths clear of Mercurial (5/1).

Coen said: “He's a horse that I thought would progress well from Fairyhouse, but a couple of little things didn't go right for him and he probably needs that kind of set-up, following a fast pace.

“It's nice to get him back on track. He handles that ground well.

"If we could get one more out of him (this season), it would be ideal.”
