We have an excellent card to look forward to at the Curragh on Tuesday, with some thoroughly competitive action across the seven races.

The feature race of the day is the Group 3 Staffordstown Stud Stakes, which is a mile event for the two-year-olds.

We’ve picked out an owner, trainer and jockey to follow, including a bang in-form rider who rode a four-timer at Leopardstown on Sunday. It could be another successful day for one of Flat racing’s biggest operations too.

Owners - Coolmore

The Coolmore lads have had yet another big year, winning some of the biggest races across the world, and they are represented by a number of decent chances across the card.

Three of these line up in the day’s feature race and it’ll be a bit of a shock if the prize doesn’t go back to Ballydoyle. Sugar Island appears to be the main candidate according to jockey bookings and the market, as Wayne Lordan is set to take the ride. She was a solid third in the Group 2 May Hill Stakes at Doncaster on her penultimate start and a similar effort would be enough. Ice Dancer will be ridden by Ronan Whelan and she won’t be inconvenienced by the testing conditions, having won on heavy ground at Gowran when last seen. More will be needed at this level but she’s entitled to progress again. Cameo is the mount of Jack Cleary and she shouldn’t be dismissed either. Trojan Warrior makes his debut in the opening maiden and there’s plenty to like about his pedigree.

Happiest should be capable of winning a weak maiden such as this, whilst Mont St Michel might find the 1m4f trip a little too short.

Trainer - Ger Lyons

Ger Lyons is one of Ireland’s best Flat trainers and he is set to send two runners to the Curragh on Tuesday, one of which runs in the Group 3. La Fogata got the better of Cameo when winning a Punchestown maiden over this trip back in September and will be hoping to confirm the form. Fourth in a course and distance Group 3 before that, the daughter of Mehmas probably has a bit to find on that evidence, although further progress seems very feasible.

Poetic Sound goes in the Amateur Riders Derby and he’s pretty well suited by the conditions of the race. He was two lengths behind the great Kyprios in a Listed contest at Navan in April and a return to that form would give him every chance.

Jockey - Jack Cleary

Jockey Jack Cleary is trying to chase down those ahead him in the Apprentice Jockeys’ Championship and a four-timer at Leopardstown on Sunday put him within firing range. He rides Cameo in the big race and the progressive filly isn’t without a chance.

She looked badly in need of the experience on debut at Cork and so it proved, as she produced a much better display to finish third behind La Fogata at Punchestown.

The daughter of Wootton Bassett was an impressive winner here last time out and it wouldn’t be a surprise if she manages to reverse the form with Ger Lyons’ runner this time around. Clearly she’s going the right way and the best is surely yet to come.
