Curragh on cards for Workforce

Workforce is reported to be in fine form following his spellbinding performance in the Investec Derby.

The Khalid Abdullah-owned colt turned in a superb show to win the Epsom Classic by seven lengths on his third start, also shaving a second off Lammtarra's course record set in 1995.

The owner's racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe confirmed the Irish Derby on June 27th is his likely next port of call, but connections will not make a final decision until nearer the time.

"It was a very exciting performance and he's come out of the race absolutely fine," said Grimthorpe.

"It really was a remarkable performance for a horse so inexperienced, and for him to break the course record is something else.

"Sir Michael (Stoute) was obviously worried about his lack of experience beforehand and would have preferred to have given him another run, but it all worked out well on the day, which is great.

"The Irish Derby would look the obvious next step, but we'll just see how the horse takes this race and sit down and make a plan for the rest of the season.

"Where he goes next will obviously have an impact on his following race, so we just want to make sure we take the correct route with him."

Abdullah's other Derby runner was Lingfield Trial winner Bullet Train, but he proved disappointing and trailed home last of the 12 runners.

"He pulled up sound and I believe he's fine, but he just didn't seem to act on the track," Grimthorpe added.
