Deegan on weather watch

Paul Deegan needs rain for Best Hello to run at the Curragh this weekend, although he believes the colt can develop into a Ladbrokes St Leger contender later in the season.

The son of Beat Hollow won on his debut at Leopardstown and returned there to run a highly creditable race in the Derrinstown Derby Trial, beaten only by the three Aidan O'Brien runners.

He holds an entry in Sunday's Airlie Stud Gallinule Stakes but the Curragh handler will only run him if there is some significant rain during the week.

"I was delighted with him last time, for a horse who had only had one run it was a very good effort," said Deegan.

"They went a proper gallop all the way, yet my lad kept going all the way to the line.

"Ideally he wants further, he's a horse that will stay a mile and a half and probably more. He's finished fourth in a very good Group 2 second time up so he's going the right way.

"He wants more ease in the ground and that's a concern for Sunday. He won't run as it stands, we'd need some rain. The long-term plan with him is the English Leger. We've put him in the Irish Leger but we'd much prefer Doncaster.

"The owner (Jaber Abdullah) is a good judge of a horse, he never spends too much but he always has a few nice ones on the go. It's great to have someone like him on board and it's a massive boost to the yard."
