Dogs At Cheltenham

Cheltenham's idea of staging a 200 yard ?straight' greyhound race immediately after racing concludes on the opening day of this year's Festival has caused its share of debate.

It has emerged that the greyhounds involved will be ?flappers'. Apparently the governing body of the sport in England, the NRGC, were caught somewhat on the hop by the move and have missed the opportunity to showcase the licensed end of the game.

Participants in the event will have to have qualified through a series of heats at independent tracks. The race at Cheltenham will be the final of the competition and will carry a purse of 1,000 pounds.

Starting from traps, the dogs will be lured by a drag hare over a 200 yard straight course in what is predicted to be a great spectacle.
