Drama in Childers at Doncaster There was a dramatic climax to the Polypipe Flying Childers Stakes at Doncaster as Cotai Glory threw away almost certain victory by unseating George Baker, gifting the race to Richard Hannon's Beacon. The Charlie Hills-trained Cotai Glory got off to a fast start in the five-furlong Group Two and showed a potent turn of foot to leave his rivals trailing in his wake passing the furlong marker. He was still a couple of lengths to the good when he began hanging violently towards the stands rail as the line approached, and as his saddle slipped, Baker was unable to hold on, getting dumped on the turf. On the far side of the track Beacon (8-1) got up in the last stride under William Buick to deny 50-1 shot Astrophysics by a head, with the Tommy Stack-trained Accepted just half a length away in third. The Ger Lyons-trained Ainippe was sent off the 7/2 favourite but could only finish fifth. Seemingly none the worse, a tearful Baker was comforted by Hills before the pair walked back on to the racecourse to collect the horse. Baker said: "I was lugging right when I had the race won, but something must have caught his vision. The saddle went slightly - it's so annoying but it's just one of those things. Put it this way, I definitely wouldn't make a jump jockey." Hills said: "The horse is absolutely fine and we're obviously a bit distraught. If George had managed (to stay on) another four strides he'd have been all right, but the horse is very quick, you can't take anything away from him. He's got his quirks. It's a hard one to swallow, but he's a good horse and we live to fight another day." The Lambourn trainer added: "His saddle didn't slip. He just wasn't doing a lot in front, he lost his concentration and ducked to the right, that's all."
