The Denis Hogan trained Ephesus kept on strongly under Joey Sheridan to win the On-Course Vets Handicap at Roscommon.

Successful in a Curragh maiden for Aidan O'Brien last year, the gelding had scored over hurdles for Hogan at Limerick in April.

Back on the Flat here, the 12/1 chance was always prominent, before heading leader Je T'Ai Porte over two furlongs out.

Strongly pressed inside the final furlong, the T & M Partnership owned four-year-old stuck to his task admirably to win by one-and-three-quarter lengths.

Joey Sheridan said: “He stuck at it. He handles that bad ground. It’s hard to make up ground today and I was able to be nice and handy on him.

“I just stayed out a little bit on the straights for the nicer ground, until I needed to keep things tight on my inside.

“I jumped and aimed to make the running on him again but I was happy to take a lead and it worked out well.

“He’s a grand horse, he’s genuine, and he’s after winning under both codes for us now.

“It’s nice for Tony and Mike, the owners, they are good supporters. It’s nice to get them a winner before the season is out.”
