Waldgeist staked his claim for the Investec Derby in giving trainer Andre Fabre a sixth win in the Criterium de Saint-Cloud.

The son of Galileo relished every yard of the 10-furlong stamina test when finishing strongly to take the Group One honours on his third career start.

After making a successful debut at Chantilly in September, he was third in the Prix de Conde there three weeks ago but comfortably turned the tables on Frankuus and Prinz Hlodowig, who had finished ahead of him.

Jockey Pierre-Charles Boudot was at Waldgeist (10-1) from some way out, but his perseverance was rewarded as his mount hit top gear in the final furlong after Saeed bin Suroor's Best Solution had kicked for home.

Boudot, who had been unshipped from Capchop shortly after leaving the stalls in the Criterium International won by Godolphin's Thunder Snow, would not be denied as Waldgeist gained the verdict by a length.

The Aidan O'Brien-trained Capri, the 10-11 favourite, was half a length away in third without being able to land a serious blow.

Fabre, whose sole Epsom success came with Pour Moi in 2011, said: "I was fond of him before and I'm even fonder of him now. He is not short of pace, but the longer distance didn't do him any harm.

"He is obviously a Derby type. I can see him performing well at the Curragh (in the Irish Derby), but he will be prepared for the Epsom Derby as well."

Rekindling, for David Wachman who is retiring from the training ranks, finished unplaced.
