Forpadydeplasterer, winner of the 2009 Arkle Trophy at the Cheltenham Festival, has been retired.

Trainer Tom Cooper called time on the popular 11-year-old's career after he largely struggled to show his best form during the past few seasons.

He was last seen finishing down the field in the Munster National at Limerick on October 13.

Cooper said: "He's retiring 100% sound, and that's the main thing. It would have been terrible if something had happened to him so I think it was the right decision and the right time to retire him.

"It's a shame he didn't win a few more Grade Ones because he finished second in so many good races against so many good horses.

"He'd be the best horse I have had. I'll always be grateful to him for the great days, and the great memories, he has given us."

Forpadydeplasterer won six times, including in the 2008 Deloitte Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown and in the Arkle, but he also finished second in 14 other races - many of which in top company.

He amassed over £470,000 in prize-money for his owners, the Goat Racing Syndicate.
