Gatsby lands French Derby The Grey Gatsby claimed a famous victory for the Kevin Ryan stable in the Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly. Winner of the Dante Stakes at York on his previous start, the son of Mastercraftsman was settled towards the rear of the field on the rail by Ryan Moore and found a smooth passage through when they turned into the straight. He burst into the lead inside the final two furlongs and found a devastating turn of foot to go clear before winning comfortably, with hot favourite Prince Gibraltar getting a run far too late as he swept up from the rear to take third. It was a first victory in the French Derby for Moore, and a first major European Classic for North Yorkshire-based Ryan, whose main trophies to date have largely come with two-year-olds. As is often the case, it was a rough and tactical race and the most obvious hard-luck story came with the highly rated Prince Gibraltar, who was stuck at the back of the field before making late ground under Gerald Mosse. Shamkiyr took second place for the Aga Khan, while the other British raider Ayrad finished out of the frame.
