Geezer an appropriate winner of Chester opener

Julius Geezer (who made his debut at the Curragh in March) made all the running to spring a surprise in the opening race of the three-day May meeting at Chester.

Richard Kingscote had the 12-1 shot smartly out of the stalls to grab the rail and see off all-comers in the Manor House Stables Lily Agnes Conditions Stakes.

The juvenile colt, trained by Tom Dascombe, had a handy lead turning for home and kept on strongly to beat the odds-on favourite Bathwick Bear by two and three-quarter lengths.

Julius Geezer was an apt winner of the race as it was sponsored by Manchester United star Michael Owen's Manor House Stables where Dascombe is based.

Kingscote said: "That's our first two-year-old winner of the season and it's a nice place to do it.

"I was really pleased with his last run at Newmarket in what was a good race.

"The time before in Ireland he just got a bit stirred up first time out, so you can put a line through that.

"He's always been a quick horse and he picked up really well once we straightened up."

Dascombe added: "It's disappointing when your horses aren't running well but this has always been a nice horse and I couldn't understand why he hadn't been running very well, but he's done it today.

"It's a massive relief and we would have run all 56 two-year-olds in this race if we could!

"It's still confusing as the filly we ran (Coconut Ice) has been going better than the winner and I really thought she'd beat him today."
