John and Thady Gosden are taking a patient approach with Field Of Gold, as he continues his recovery from a lung infection discovered after his return at Sandown.

One of last year’s star milers, dazzling when both avenging 2000 Guineas defeat in the Irish equivalent before storming to victory in the St James’s Palace Stakes, his three-year-old campaign suffered an interruption after finishing lame in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood, seen just one more time in 2025.

Kept in training by owners Juddmonte, the son of Kingman was a promising second behind Opera Ballo in his seasonal return but it was soon revealed he would face a race against time to make the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, subsequently missing Newbury’s Lockinge Stakes.

He was a notable absentee from the opening contest for the Royal meeting at the latest confirmation stage this week, with John Gosden explaining there will be no rush taken to get the hugely-talented colt back to the racecourse.

Gosden said: “He’s fine and is coming along, but it was a deep-seated infection in the lung and not something which has shifted in a hurry.

“We’re being patient and giving him every chance and you can’t take a short cut with something like that.

“We will know more in about a month and Royal Ascot was always unlikely. We have to be careful and you have to remember it is not even halfway through the season until the July meeting at Newmarket.”
