HAYDOCK ABANDONED

Despite the valiant attempts of all concerned there will be no National Hunt racing in Britain on Saturday.

Hopes that Haydock Park`s card - which was due to feature the cantorsport.co.uk `Dipper` Chase after the abandonment of Newcastle earlier this week - would beat the weather were finally ended after three inspections in the morning.

And ironically it was not waterlogging but frost which caused the Merseyside venue`s downfall.

Officials looked at 7.00am and 8.30am and were optimistic but had to concede defeat 90 minutes later with one or two areas of the track still frozen.

Clerk of the course Kirkland Tellwright had hoped that those areas, mainly divot marks on the back straight, would thaw in time but he said: 'We`ve abandoned - it just isn`t happening quick enough

'It`s at zero now but on the back straight behind the trees you just can`t see enough sun getting through the trees to clear these divots on the back straight.'

Only two meetings will now take place this afternoon, both on the all-weather, at Lingfield and Southwell.

A decision on whether the `Dipper` will be saved and run at another track is not expected to be made until Monday at the earliest, officials at the British Horseracing Board confirmed.
