HRI Approves Killarney Development

Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, Mr John O'Donoghue, T.D. together with Mr Denis Brosnan, Chairman of Horse Racing Ireland (HRI), today announced a ?1.7m re-development of the weighroom and ancillary facilities at Killarney Racecourse.

Approval for the project was confirmed at a meeting of the Board of Horse Racing Ireland on Monday 26th September 2005.

At a meeting to announce the development, the Minster for Arts, Sport and Tourism, John O'Donoghue, TD said: 'I congratulate Killarney Racecourse on their ambitious plans. The racecourse is arguably the most beautiful in the country and has provided locals and visitors from Ireland and abroad with a unique race-day experience in its present location since 1936.

This is the type of development which was envisaged by the creation of the Horse & Greyhound Racing Fund. Racegoers and professionals alike expect the best facilities possible and I am convinced that they will like what they see in the ?new' Killarney.'

The existing weighroom, Stewards room and public toilets will be demolished and a new building created, incorporating elements of the existing two storey block. The key elements of the building will be a new Stewards room, weigh-room, press room, Racegoers Club bar, and a corporate dining area with viewing balcony. The catering facilities for stable staff will also be upgraded. The new bar and dining area will be used as the Ross Golf Club clubhouse and function rooms outside racedays.

HRI Chief Executive Brian Kavanagh said: 'Killarney racecourse has brought forward an innovative plan which will improve the racecourse as a working environment and give racegoers well appointed new facilities. HRI will provide in excess of ?900,000 in grant aid for this scheme which will enhance Killarney's long-term future.'

Commenting on the new developments, Killarney Chairman, John Buckley said: 'This year Killarney celebrated 250 years since the first race meeting was held in the area. The shareholders and directors of the Killarney Race Co. Ltd. have, since 1936, dedicated themselves to the future of horse racing and providing a wonderful amenity to the town. This development is another major commitment and will ensure the future success of the race track.

We would like to pay tribute to the Minister and Horse Racing Ireland for their efforts in the development and promotion of racing in Ireland and abroad. This project will make a great difference to Killarney and we are very grateful for their support. '
