Race 2

The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Real Appeal, ridden by Brian Hayes and trained by Mr Denis Ahern.

Evidence was heard from the rider concerned who stated that his instructions were to settle his mount in mid-division and to hold onto him as long as possible before riding a race. He added that the horse jumped off further back than ideal, ran very keen on the first circuit and became unbalanced down the hill before staying on well from the turn into the straight. He concluded by saying that in hindsight he may have misjudged things, leaving it too late to put his horse into the race but was trying to do his best for the horse.

Evidence was heard from the trainer concerned who confirmed the instructions and stated that his charge ran very free on his last start. He also expressed his dissatisfaction with the ride by saying that the rider left it too late to make up ground.

The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer who stated that Real Appeal lost two shoes in running but was otherwise post race normal.

Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the trainers explanation offered, however they were of the opinion that the rider was in breach of Rule 212, having failed to take reasonable and permissible measures to obtain his best possible place and having considered his record suspended him for ten race days and ordered that he forfeit his riding fee.
