Hobbs among Champion Stakes 15

Irish Derby hero Jack Hobbs is one of the star names among 15 horses confirmed for the Qipco Champion Stakes at Ascot on Saturday.

Runner-up to esteemed stable companion Golden Horn in the Dante at York and the Derby at Epsom, the Godolphin-owned Jack Hobbs enjoyed his day in the sun when clinching Classic glory at the Curragh in late June.

John Gosden's charge made a successful return to action in the September Stakes at Kempton and after sidestepping the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, he is set to drop to a mile and a quarter for the main event on Champions Day. The Clarehaven handler has also left in potential pacemaker Maverick Wave.

Gosden said: "When you put that kind of race on for that kind of money you'll get a lot of really classy and tough horses.

"I think the key thing is the draw. If you've ever stood at the mile and a quarter start at Ascot - if you get drawn wide, you hit that bend in Swinley Bottom pretty fast, so we'll all be hoping to be drawn one to about eight.

"There won't be room for all of us there, so let's hope nobody feels hard done by with the draw.

"He should handle the ground."

Dermot Weld looks set to rely on Fascinating Rock after taking out Royal Ascot hero Free Eagle.

Aidan O'Brien's only remaining entry is top-class filly Found, who endured a luckless run in the Arc little over a week ago and was second to Golden Horn in the Irish Champion Stakes.

Other contenders include 2011 Champion Stakes winner Cirrus Des Aigles, The Corsican, Elm Park, Ribbons and Racing History, who was supplemented at a cost of £75,000 by Saeed bin Suroor and Godolphin.

Ribbons will have the assistance of man-of-the-moment Frankie Dettori.

The on-song Italian last season won a Group One in France aboard the five-year-old mare and will be reunited with James Fanshawe's inmate at the weekend.

"She runs and Frankie rides," said Fanshawe.

Ribbons warmed up for the Champion Stakes with a half-length victory in the Blandford Stakes at the Curragh in September, when she was ridden by Tom Queally.

She was in contention for the Prix de l'Opera at Longchamp last weekend but was taken out of the race as the ground at the Paris track was considered too quick.
