Horse Racing-Triple Gold Cup Winner Best Mate Dies

Best Mate, winner of three successive Cheltenham Gold Cups, died of a suspected heart attack while racing at Exeter on Tuesday, the Jockey Club said.

The horse, trained by Henrietta Knight and which won the Gold Cup from 2001 to 2003, was pulled up by jockey Paul Carberry during the home straight of the race.

The 10-year-old was making his return after suffering a burst blood vessel last year.

'Best Mate´s much anticipated racecourse return ended in tragedy as he suffered a suspected fatal heart attack in the William Hill Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter,' the Jockey Club, British racing´s controlling body, announced on its website on Tuesday.
