Jesse Evans recorded his tenth career win when showing great determination to just come out on top in the Kevin McManus Bookmaker Grimes Hurdle at Tipperary.

The Noel Meade-trained gelding, who has made the frame three times in the Galway Hurdle, was well supported this morning from 6/1 for this Grade 3 event and was sent off a 7/2 chance. Enniskerry struck the front between the final two flights but Jesse Evans really dug deep on the run-in for Donagh Meyler and just got up in the closing stages to score by half a length. Sunchart was a further four and three-quarter lengths back in third, while 5/2 favourite Gaucher was prominent throughout but faded to finish fourth.

Meyler said, “He’s been great and has brought the owners all over the place and was in Ascot not so long ago. He’s a yard favourite.

“He’s grinded it out and is as tough as nails.

“He had a nice weight on the ratings and had match fitness on his side which definitely paid off there.

“He’s toughed it out the whole way up the straight.

“I’m not sure what plans are but he’s won a Graded race today and we’ll celebrate that.”
