Although Willie Mullins isn’t represented, Gordon Elliott, Gavin Cromwell, Henry De Bromhead and Joseph O’Brien are responsible for seven of the 16 contenders, with Elliott running three and Penny Express the pick of stable jockey Jack Kennedy.

She was keen on her handicap debut last time and is likely to prove popular, with punters hoping she will eventually prove more tractable in the hood she wears for the fourth time.

De Bromhead saddles top weight Red Glory who has won two of his last four races, both handicaps, and is likely to be on the sharp end here which can be very useful at this tight track.

Joseph O’Brien is the most successful course trainer saddling a runner with a 29% success rate here over the past five seasons. His runner Duke Silver has been disappointing to date but this five-year-old gets cheekpieces and an improved showing wouldn’t surprise.

    Shadow can shine

The selection however is SHADOW PADDY from the yard of Eoin McCarthy, who has his share of winners here. This five-year-old has been kept for this since winning his second successive handicap at Limerick in May in taking style and he can make light of an 11lb rise.

After a nothing bumper run and three undistinguished runs in maiden hurdles, Shadow Paddy was sent off at 11/1 for his handicap debut at Tipperary in May, but came home an easy winner after travelling strongly throughout.

After an 8lb rise he wasn’t missed by the market next time and he again travelled all over the field to run out a ready winner from the reopposing Boston Rajj winning as he liked.

Thanks to that one franking the form with a comfortable win next time, they meet on the same terms here and Shadow Paddy is taken to continue his rise up the ranks and repay connections’ patience.

    Queenofthelodge a danger

If there is a fly in Shadow Paddy’s ointment it might come from Sam Curling’s progressive mare QUEENOFTHELODGE who has put up career-best performances in her last five outings.

These have included three runner-up finishes in handicap hurdles from 2m to 2m2f, a win at the latter trip and then a new best performance when taking an open handicap trip last time.

That was her first run at this trip, her running style and pedigree both indicating it would suit, and so it proved as she kept finding for pressure and was well on top at the line.

A well-run race over two and a half miles will suit her for now and she can give the selection most to do.
