Killarney's summer festival is in full flow, with five days of action at the picturesque Co Kerry layout getting underway on Monday.

The middle day features the Listed Irish Stallion Farms EBF Cairn Rouge Stakes over a mile, race inaugurated in 2014 and won by the likes of Aidan O'Brien (3), Dermot Weld, Jessica Harrington, Ger Lyons, Willie McCreery and Joseph O'Brien in its 11-year history.

A field of 13 fillies were declared for the race, with €30,000 on offer to the winner, and Lyons' Red Letter is forecast to head the betting.

  • Red Letter day for Lyons' filly

Ger Lyons and Colin Keane link up here with RED LETTER, the Juddmonte-owned Frankel filly. She showed clear ability in three runs last year and ran a big race on her comeback in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, finishing seventh but beaten just under three lengths in that high-class Rowley Mile Classic.

She went to Navan afterwards for a Listed contest over a mile and it was a little bit of a letdown when she couldn't justify favouritism there, having travelled well before being outbattled by Jessica Harrington's Barnavara in the closing stages.

However, given they had moved well clear of the chasing pack to fight out that finish, the outcome has to be viewed in the context of the knowledge that Barnavara has since come out and won a Group 3 at Naas over further in really good style.

Again, she denied a Lyons inmate in Faiyum there, the front two miles clear, and that form-boost means Red Letter is the one to beat heading for Killarney.

She is 7lb clear on official ratings from her nearest rival on paper and looks set to collect a second win in this race for her trainer/jockey combo, following the success of Viadera in 2019.

Weld's Bella to land a blow

Dermot Weld won this race with Bella Estrella in 2018 and the Rosewell House handler could have an outsider of note in BELLA ISABELLA now in the famous Moyglare silks.

The Wootton Bassett filly only ran once last season as a juvenile but has come forward this year.

She was second behind smart performer California Dreamer on her comeback at Dundalk over a mile in February and then won a Curragh maiden (7f, good) in April.

Next time out she was third behind progressive Vera's Secret in a Group 3 at Leopardstown in May, form that received another boost last week as the winner scooped more Group-race glory at the Foxrock venue. The placed horses from that race have also done well since.

Bella Isabella meanwhile was perhaps given too much to do on her only run since when held up in the GAIN Summer Fillies Handicap at the Curragh before finishing fifth.

She is unexposed at this mile trip and could have plenty more to offer if Leigh Roche can keep her handily placed in the early stages from a wide draw.

In that scenario, the filly looks up to the challenge of outrunning her forecast double-figure odds.
