Mel Sheridan rode the second winner of his career when getting Numidia (25/1) up in the final stride in the McNallys Pharmacy Apprentice Handicap at Bellewstown.

The 11/4 favourite Jurality having led from stalls, seemed set for victory in the extended one mile, six furlong-contest until nabbed on the line as Numidia, after a lengthy examination of the photograph by the judge, got the verdict by a nose to gain a fifth career win.

Owner/trainer Peter Lawlor, based in Hollywood Co Wicklow, said "I didn't think he was up but, he longer it went on, I said 'jeez, maybe'. Mel said yes, he thought he was up.

"He was trapped on the rails there, one in front and one alongside him and, in all fairness to the young fella, he found his way out of it. He had to solve a few problems out there and he didn't panic.

"He's a brother of Joey, so he would be well taught anyway. I'm delighted for Mel.

"He does stay (two miles) and he's down to a nice mark there. Down Royal had gone too soft for him.

"He'll roll away now."
