Liam Cashman has passed away

A leading figure in the bloodstock world, Liam Cashman, owner of Rathbarry & Glenview Studs in County Cork, passed away today following a short-illness.

Aged 72, Liam Cashman had been a patient at the Bon Secours Hospital in Cork and he leaves behind his wife, Catherine (originally from Ballynoe), his daughter Niamh (wife of former National Hunt jockey, Frannie Woods) and son Paul (an accomplished amateur rider and trainer).

Poignantly Paul trained Storming Gale to win the four-year-old maiden at Lismore last Sunday. The son of Revoque was owned by Liam.

Rathbarry was founded in 1935 with Glenview opening in 1991 to cater for the National Hunt stallions.

Liam's father before him, also Paul, stood the stallion Perspex (Liam rode that fellow to win a bumper at Mallow when trained by the late Jimmy Murphy) and Chinatown (sire of Ballinacurra Lad) in the 60s and 70s.

Of course the hugely influential Strong Gale (Presenting to come afterwards) stood with the Cashmans and the flat side of the operation lists the breeding of Finsceal Beo as one of its very many achievements.

A close family friend commented this afternoon: "He meant an awful lot to an awful lot of people. He'll be a huge loss to the industry, not alone to the stud. He was a man before his time. It is a shock to us; we didn't expect this at all."
