Local winner of Dingle Derby

Fourteen year old Joe Doyle, son of former jockey Jim Doyle and nephew of trainer Pat Doyle, steered Your Ma to win the Dingle Derby yesterday, providing locally based Gary Boyle with a first win for the locals in the centrepiece of the ‘flapping’ year.

Speaking today, Boyle said “I am the first person to both own and train a Dingle Derby winner. Your Ma, a six year old, was also the first winner of the race from this area (Boyle trains two miles from the track in Dingle).”

He added “Joe (Doyle) is a great young fella and rides out for Aidan O’Brien – that says all you need to know about his talent!”

The three day Dingle Festival of Pony & Racing is something of a national institution with large crowds in attendance this year. Prizemoney for the three days was €40,000 with the Derby, run over two miles, worth €6,000.
