Main Sequence will be given a mid-season break after a dirty scope explained his lacklustre display at Pontefract on Sunday.

Last year's Derby runner-up was an even-money favourite for the Pontefract Castle Stakes, having been narrowly denied by Mukhadram in Sandown's Brigadier Gerard on his previous start.

That form looks rock-solid in light of the winner's fine effort in the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot, but Main Sequence trailed home a well-beaten fourth behind Brown Panther in Yorkshire.

Trainer David Lanigan said: ""He's on a course of antibiotics now and is going to have a quiet two weeks.

"I knew there was something wrong as he was beaten three furlongs out and pretty much walked over the line. When they do that you know it's not their true running and, sure enough, he had a proper dirty scope.

"It's a good chance to give him a bit of a break and we'll take our time.

"There are plenty of races towards the back-end and it could be August or September before he runs again."
