Teenager Emily Grifferty rode her first winner in Dundalk's apprentice handicap over a mile and a half as the John McConnell-trained Syosset the 50/1 outsider of the field, came from well off the pace to score on his handicap debut.

Unplaced in five runs over hurdles as well as three maidens on the Flat, Caroline Ahearn's Crystal Ocean four-year-old made headway from early in the straight and led inside the final furlong to beat Jawhary by two and a quarter lengths. Just Another Eagle slipped up on the approach to the straight but thankfully jockey Robyn Donaghue-Leahy and the horse were okay.

Grifferty, who picked up a two-day suspension for using her whip in the forehand position, said: "I'm delighted! I can't thank John enough for putting me up on his horse.

"I'm in Noel Meade's full-time and I go into John's on a Sunday. I have been second recently a few times for Noel.

"I'm from just outside Drogheda and I'm 18. I just did my Leaving Cert last year, so I'm giving it a good go now.

"Definitely (a patient race paid off), he just picked up really well and finished out strong. I pulled out coming up the straight and he really picked up."
