Review CLONMEL 25TH MAY

Johnny Murtagh took the honours on the Flat and Davy Russell over jumps as racing resumed, after an unseasonable wet spell, at Clonmel.

Voliere initiated a double for Murtagh when making all for a convincing win in the opening Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden.

The daughter of Zafonic veered across the track in the closing stages but was still a comfortable four-and-a-half length victor from Reside.

'We think a fair bit of her. She's a lovely filly and has a bit of class. She was in front for a long way there. I think she has enough boot to come back to a mile,' said winning trainer Ger Lyons.

Tom Hogan was full of praise for Murtagh after he produced Faithlegg Girl with a strong run inside the final furlong to land the Knockmealdown Handicap.

'Johnny gave her a super ride. Luckily the ground wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. She improved a lot from her run at Killarney,' said the trainer by phone.

Lilly Lavender gave Con Collins his first winner of the season in Ireland when keeping on strongly, after hitting the front turning for home, in the Cahir Handicap.

Davy Russell also grabbed a brace on the card courtesy of Swiss Hall and Clover Pearl.

Russell came wide into the straight in search of better ground on Swiss Hall, in the Cashel Maiden Hurdle, and she pulled clear before the second last to record a comfortable four-and-a-half length victory over Tubber Gael Holly.

Clochmhaoil Castle looked to have poached a handy lead entering the straight in the Powerstown Handicap Hurdle but weakened before the last and Clover Pearl came through to land the spoils.

Kit Carson looks to have a bright future over fences after making an impressive debut over the larger obstacles in the Slievenamon Beginners Chase.

Charlie Swan's charge was a well backed 2/1f and punters had few worries as Ruby Walsh produced him to lead at the second last. He promptly drew clear, going on to beat Hegarty's Rock by eight lengths.
