Review DOWN ROYAL 2ND SEP

Trainer Noel Meade provided jockey Dennis O'Regan with his first double at Down Royal today, with the pair combining for a 10/1 brace in the opening two races.

Naples got the ball rolling in the opening Down Royal Festival Of Racing Hurdle, easily justifying 8/13 favouritism.

The son of Tragic Role made all, eventually stretching clear from the second last, to defeat Keelaghan by five lengths.

Meade was absent, in Germany, but winning owner Kieran McGinn later joked 'I told Noel to stay away because the horse seems to win any time Noel isn't racing!'

Meade later reported by phone 'Naples will stick to racing on fast ground.'

Half an hour later, Meade was back on the phone following Irish Blade's win in an eventful Winning Post Cafi Handicap Hurdle.

Eventual winner Irish Blade was a little fortunate to win, with runner-up Team Allstar experiencing traffic difficulty approaching the last flight, where leader Mother McGinty unseated her rider.

Irish Blade survived the subsequent stewards' inquiry while Meade later mentioned 'he'll go for another handicap at Galway on Tuesday.'

Yet another malfunction with the starting stalls meant 13 of the 14 runners for the 7f maiden had to be recalled before a tape start was effected.

Eventual winner Jazabelle stole a few lengths in the subsequent re-start and the Con Collins trained filly eventually responded well to Pat Shanahan's urgings to hold on for a head win over 5/2 favourite Kempes.

Collins' daughter Tracey later mentioned 'my father owns her and she is for sale - she is a potentially smart filly.'

Trainer Pat Flynn was another to record a double at the meeting, opening with Always On Top's win in the Derrinstown Stud Apprentice Handicap.

Jockey Keith Maher kept the Desert Story filly up to her work in the closing stages of the Derrinstown Stud Apprentice Handicap to defeat the gambled on Orange Orchid (20/1 in the morning and returned at 6/1)

An hour later Flynn's Wangara landed the Renault Master Handicap under Pat Smullen.

Flynn was absent but was represented by his assistant Martin Maguire who reported 'we thought a lot of her but she kept getting left in the stalls, which often meant she got into traffic difficulty in races. She should go on and win a few more races now.'

The bumper was run as the third race, with Mickey Flynn's Sweet Memories winning under Chris Cully.

Afterwards, Flynn reported 'he had been disappointing and we thought he might have been bursting but he does appear to like fast ground.'

He added 'he will probably have one more race before being put away until next year.'
