Review GOWRAN PARK 4TH OCT

She got up near the finish to make a winning debut at Galway last month and Via Mantua emphasised her will to win when remaining unbeaten in the featured McEnery Cup Handicap.

It was a tip in itself that connections saw fit to put the 3yo into h'cap company at the second time of asking, off a rating of 77, and with just 8st 4Ib on her back this big filly was an attractive proposition.

The Cyril Humphris owned and bred 100/30 favourite challenged in the final quarter mile, leading on the line to deny Define by the minimum margin.

John Oxx and Michael Kinane, who combined with Via Mantua, were expected to double-up half-an-hour later courtesy of Lilanda but she could manage no better than 4th.

Persistence paid off here for My Dolly Madison in this fillies maiden. Having her 12th start, the Andrew Kinsella-trained 2L winner was a second on the day for jockey Seamie Heffernan.

The market certainly helped clarify matters in the opening juvenile maidens where the Ballydoyle team was just denied a double. Their Soinlovewithyou took the fillies event.

Heffernan made all on the 5/1 shot (sixes in the morning and touched 11/2 on track) and she was not going to be beaten from under 2 furlongs out, eased close home to defeat 2/1 fav, Carbonia by 1L.

Soinlovewithyou was getting off the mark at the fifth attempt and similarly, Houston Dynimo was trying for the sixth time to shed his maiden tag half an hour later.

Early punters clearly believed Kevin Prendergast's charge could make the breakthrough this time as the Norman Ormiston-owned son of Rock Of Gibraltar was backed from 7/2 into a returned 9/4.

However Observation Post, for the Soinlovewithyou trio of Michael Tabor, Aidan O'Brien and Heffernan was also clearly well-fancied and he ended up 15/8 fav having touched 100/30.

Declan McDonogh got to the front on Houston Dynimo early in the straight and he held off the rallying Observation Post inside the final furlong, prevailing by a head.

A 314/1 treble was completed for Seamie Heffernan when Don Pedro Mendoza made it number two of the afternoon for Aidan O'Brien in the 5.35.

Jessica Harrington can do little wrong at present and herself and Fran Berry continued their profitable association when Naked Ambition survived a stumble in the 3yo h'cap.

That happened over a furlong out when the front-runner collided with the rail but the 8/1 chance quickly corrected himself going on to beat Katirisa by 1L.

Ian Brennan (19) from Donaghmede in Dublin, rode his first winner on his tenth ride when Distant Piper landed the closing apprentice h'cap for Ado McGuinness.

Distant Piper is engaged again tomorrow, in division two of the Bramblestown H'cap, and she might turn out.
