Review LEOPARDSTOWN 25TH JUN

John Murtagh had mixed fortunes at this well-attended Special Olympics race evening, picking up a suspension when successfully partnering Montevideo in the mile and a half maiden.

The John Oxx-trained colt struck the front early in the straight but edged left just inside the final furlong hampering a weakening Ibtecar (finished third) before going on to hold Prominent Feature by 3/4L.

The placings remained unaltered after an enquiry, but Murtagh was found guilty of careless riding and suspended for two days (July 4 & 5).

The second day of the ban would mean missing the Coral Eurobet Eclipse Stakes at Sandown but Murtagh has 48 hours in which to appeal.

Michael Kinane rubbed salt into the wounds when drawing level with Murtagh in the jockeys' championship on the 29 winner mark with a double aboard Irish Stream and Sophister.

Irish Stream made all in the nine furlongs handicap, quickening clear off the home bend to beat Carlesimo by two lengths and could reappear again at the Curragh on Friday evening.

Kinane adopted similar tactics half-an-hour later on Sophister in the seven furlongs handicap, with the top-weight staying on gamely in the straight to beat Soranna by 1 1/2L.

Trainer David Wachman also doubled up in the concluding amateur riders maiden where Masteroffoxhounds (J P Magnier) just touched off Saintly Rachel in a tremendous finish.

Oriental Ben, a year older than his illustrious half-brother the dual Derby winner High Chaparral, provided Davy Condon with his seventh winner of the season in the apprentice handicap.

Tony Mullins' charge led two furlongs out, but needed to be ridden right out in the closing stages to deny the fast-finishing Barton Flyer by half a length.

Valentina Guest was prominent throughout in the juvenile median auction fillies maiden, and kept on well in the straight under Seamus Heffernan to beat newcomer Inspectors Choice by 1 1/2L.

Turf Club doctor Walter Halley reports Jimmy Mansell in great spirits following a recent throat operation.

Former champion claiming rider Mansell can now speak clearly and, after leaving St Vincent's Hospital tomorrow, hopes to resume rehab in Dun Laoghaire soon.
