Midas on target for Voltigeur

Aidan O'Brien has revealed that Irish Derby runner-up Midas Touch is likely to be his main candidate for next Tuesday's Great Voltigeur Stakes at York.

He could also saddle Joshua Tree, off the track since winning the Royal Lodge Stakes at Ascot last September.

"The plan is to run Midas Touch in the Great Voltigeur. He has had a break after the Irish Derby but he seems in great form," said the Ballydoyle handler.

"Joshua Tree is back in work. We're not sure if he will be ready for the Voltigeur but it's definitely the plan.

"He needs to do another few pieces of work, so he'd be a possible but not a definite.

"He had a few problems in the spring, he had a month off and it took a while to get him back.

"There might be a couple more in the mix but Midas Touch is the most forward and our most likely runner."

Future plans for Rebel Soldier are on hold after connections revealed they had accepted an offer from abroad for the Gordon Stakes winner.

Jeremy Noseda's three-year-old progressed from winning a York handicap to scoring in Group Three company at Glorious Goodwood and his next target was a return to the Knavesmire for the Voltigeur.

However, his participation is now in doubt with a sale seemingly imminent.

"At this moment he is subject to a sale going through. I have been training him with the Voltigeur in mind but if the sale goes through this weekend he won't run," said Noseda.

"My personal preference would be the Voltigeur, he's in good form and I think he would have a realistic chance.

"The horse would be going to race abroad. There has been a huge offer from Hong Kong, one we couldn't refuse."

The trainer also has Gordon Stakes sixth Theology entered in the Great Voltigeur but he looks set to be saved for a tilt at the season's final Classic, the Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster on September 11th.

"We will wait for the St Leger. He was a bit quiet after Goodwood," Noseda continued.

"Rebel Soldier was my number one but I expected Theology to be in the first four but he never really settled.

"He had had a hard race at Royal Ascot and hopefully we can get him back in top form."
