Mongolian has his day in Sprint

Frankie Dettori and Undrafted were out of luck as Mongolian Saturday lifted the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Keeneland.

Royal Ascot winner Undrafted had just one behind him through the early stages, with just a steady gallop on up front, and although making some progress, the Wes Ward-trained gelding was under pressure turning for home.

Having been on the lead throughout, Mongolian Saturday had enough in reserve to hold Lady Shipman and Green Mask, with Undrafted having to settle for fifth place.

Dettori said: "He wants six and a half furlongs, the ground is proper good, but not fast enough for him."

Ryan Moore partnered the ex-Aidan O'Brien-trained The Great War for Ward but could never get in a blow.

The rider said: "Five and a half is not really his distance and he was always struggling to get up there."

Wavell Avenue came with a withering late run to claim top honours in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint.

Chad Brown's four-year-old travelled in mid-division as La Verdad cut out a fierce pace, tracked by Stonetastic and Taris.

The leader kept going but Joel Rosario angled Wavell Avenue to the middle of the track and she stormed home to gain revenge on La Verdad, who beat her in a Belmont Grade Two in September.

Dettori had the Ward-trained 2014 winner Judy The Beauty settled in sixth but she was wide from stall 11 and was never really a factor at the business end.

Brown said: "We thought there'd be a strong pace up front. Joel has got along with this filly so well. He's really been instrumental in her development, as much as me. It's really been a team effort.

"She just fitted well in the system and she keeps getting better. Joel has given me terrific feedback every time he's ridden her. We were really confident if she got a strong pace she could get there.

"It's a thrill to be here. I'm so proud of her."

Songbird made all to win the Breeders' Juvenile Fillies in the style of a top-class performer.

The Jerry Hollendorfer-trained youngster was not in the slightest bit troubled to extend her unbeaten record under Mike Smith, the winning-most jockey at the Breeders' Cup.

Sent off the odds-on favourite, the daughter of Medaglia D'Oro had plenty in hand of the smart Rachel's Valentina, with Dothraki Queen in third.

Hollendorfer said: "We are just looking forward to next year, we'll see what happens. We've no firm plans right now, but we'll make some."

Smith added: "Once we jumped well I felt pretty confident going into the first turn. My main concern was to break well and stay on. She acts like a four-year-old, I'm blessed to be part of the team."
