Retiring trainer Joanna Morgan went out in a blaze of glory as possibly her final runner Duchess Andorra triumphed in St Moritz on Sunday.

The pioneering female rider and trainer rode more than 200 winners and was victorious across the world during an illustrious career in the saddle. She was also the first woman to ride in an Irish Classic when piloting Riot Helmet in the 1976 Irish Derby and was the first to be placed in one when she was third on El Cito in the Irish St Leger in 1980.

Morgan announced last month she was to give up the training game as she had "had enough" and confirmed at the time Duchess Andorra would be her final runner in the snow in Switzerland. And the fairytale ending came true as the four-year-old filly triumphed in the Grand Prix Schlossatelier under Colin Keane, with John Best's Berrahri filling the runner-up spot.

John Oxx was on hand to pay tribute to the outgoing County Meath handler. He said: "She's been a pioneer in Ireland. Everybody knows her, everybody loves her - she's been a landmark person.

"It's extraordinary she's in a place like this with her last runner and her last winner and we're all delighted for her and wish her the best in her future career.

"Whatever she chooses to do she'll be very successful at it."
