Mullins mare yields to Emily at Carlisle Gitane Du Berlais suffered a surprise defeat at the hands of Emily Gray in the ApolloBet Mares' Chase at Carlisle. The pair dominated this Listed contest over two and a half miles and it was Kim Bailey's charge who got the better of Willie Mullins' runner. The stamina of Emily Gray (11/4), ridden by David Bass, won the day by a length and three-quarters from the 1/2 hotpot. The pair pulled 30 lengths clear of Jennys Surprise in third. "She's a really nice mare and I'm so chuffed," Bailey told Racing UK. "The only way we were ever going to beat Gitane Du Berlais was to be with her and take her on. We know she'll get three miles, so we had that hope. "We want to keep her to mares' races. There's such a huge gulf between geldings and mares. "There's a good mares' series now. We've got to make good use of it so we're going to Doncaster for the next race."
