'I don't have the firepower to win him the apprentice jockeys' championship' - Mulvany issues rallying cry for Joyce support Sunriseontheboyne was nothing if not tough off the front in the Listowel Arms Hotel Handicap and actually won going away in the end. The 13/2 shot looked vulnerable to 9/4 favourite Chazzesmee who made good headway from a wide draw into second a furlong down. Perhaps the pursuer had used up plenty of petrol to get into that position, though, as Sunriseontheboyne and Wesley Joyce cranked up the pressure inside the final furlong and asserted in the closing stages to increase the margin to five lengths at the line. The favourite was booked for second and was three-quarters of a length in front of Titanium (6/1). Michael Mulvany said: "We normally ride him from the front and, once he got there today, he just kept quickening from the last bend home. Wesley knows him well and he is a good solid horse, so hopefully it is onwards and upwards now. "Myself and Wesley have been lucky at all the festivals this year but, unfortunately, I don't have the firepower to win him the apprentice jockeys' championship. I'm hoping other trainers can give him a chance, as he has had his problems, but is back riding as well as ever and deserves it. "He works full-time with us and drives over an hour to be in the yard before 8am every morning. He is a good rider, that's what he is, but definitely needs a bit of support." This moved Joyce on to 18 winners for the season, three behind apprentice jockeys' title race leader Robert Whearty. Additional reporting by Tom Weekes
