Murtagh stars on O'Brien filly at Chester

Johnny Murtagh was seen to great effect when giving Perfect Truth (9/1) a superb front-running ride in the Weatherbys Bank Cheshire Oaks, holding on in a thrilling finish from Phillipina.

Murtagh bounced out Aidan O'Brien's filly, and set a fierce gallop at the head of affairs. She was five lengths clear entering the short straight but just held on by a short head as Ryan Moore got a tremendous rattle out of Phillipina.

'Aidan says she's a big strong galloper and round here I put them to the test. She just got caught last time and she has improved for her last couple of runs,' said Murtagh.

'She's a tough Galileo filly and galloped on really well. I let her roll along all the way. She got a bit tired but she was entitled to.'

'It's a short straight here and I thought I was caught the last few strides but she was very brave. I thought the other one had got me but I hit the line well. She did have her head down. She's very genuine and very tough. All credit to her she's done a good job.'

Sir Michael Stoute, trainer of the runner-up, said: 'She stays well and is in the Oaks but I'd say she's unlikely to go there. We'll let the trials be run but I don't think she'll be going down that route, and I'd advise people not to back her.'
