Nayef Ascot bound

Nayef is set to bypass the Vodafone Coronation Cup at Epsom on Friday week and wait instead for Royal Ascot.

The Marcus Tregoning-trained colt finished a four-and-a-half-length third to Rebelline in the Group One Tattersalls Gold Cup on soft to heavy going at the Curragh on Sunday on his first run since landing the Dubai Sheema Classic at Nad Al Sheba in March.

'I think Epsom will come too quick now,' the Kingwood House trainer said today.

'That would have been an idea to have gone there for the Coronation Cup but that`s going to come too quick I would have thought and I think he`s more likely to wait now for the Prince Of Wales`s Stakes at Ascot.'

Tregoning believes the soft underfoot conditions contributed to Nayef`s defeat.

He said: 'The ground was very testing for them but you have got to remember the Irish horses gallop on it every day.

'Hopefully he`ll be better on the faster ground although I don`t think we need to be too concerned at this time because it`s still the early part of the year.

'I think myself he`s run all right but obviously he did get tired which was a shame.'

Nayef is still on the return journey to Lambourn and is reported none the worse for his exertions.

Tregoning added: 'He`s still travelling but apparently he`s fine.'
