Newcastle and Bangor fit to race This afternoon's meetings at Newcastle and Bangor both go ahead after two inspections. A cold night meant an initial 8am check was called at Newcastle and while officials were optimistic, that proved "inconclusive", prompting another look at 9.45am after giving temperatures the chance to rise. Clerk of the course James Armstrong was eventually able to announce via Twitter: "Racing @NewcastleRaces GOES AHEAD #comeracing #FightingFifth." The Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle is due to see an intriguing clash between Sceau Royal and Irish raider Apple's Jade, while former winner Irving also takes his chance. The ground at Bangor, where it was dry and clear overnight, was described as soft after a 9am inspection and "currently raceable", and the all-clear was given before the further assessment that was due for 10.30am. Carlisle is another track to feel the cold, with temperatures dropping to -5C overnight and resulting in a 2pm inspection being called this afternoon for tomorrow's card. The course is frozen in places.
