Backed from 4/1 into 9/4 favourite before the off, Oh Janey landed the novice handicap hurdle at Downpatrick in the hands of Sam Ewing.

Having tracked the leaders, the Free Eagle mare moved into contention two out and led approaching the last before being ridden out to beat Derry Lad by two and a half lengths.

Fourth in a maiden at Ballinrobe on her previous outing, the winner was having her first start in handicap company.

Trainer Stuart Crawford, who owns the five-year-old himself, said: "I'm really disappointed I haven't won with her before now. She has always shown us a nice wee bit at home and she has never really run a bad race, she is very consistent.

"She has started off there anyway, and sure it will maybe get her confidence up, and hopefully she can go and win again.

"To be fair to Sam, he said she was a lot sharper there today. Probably even a stronger-run race maybe would suit her better.

"It is just good to get the win with her.

"It will be (travel her again an option), go wherever as she is very straightforward. Travels well and you would have no qualms about going anywhere with her.

"She will probably go on most types of ground as well, she had been running on better ground over the summer. Bit slower today and that didn't bother her."
