Ormonde double for Expedit

Geoff Wragg and Darryll Holland teamed up to land back-to-back successes with St Expedit in the Betfair.com Ormonde Stakes at Chester today.

The 11-8 favourite was fast away under Holland and, in a repeat of the tactics used successfully 12 months ago, held all-comers at bay to score by a length from Norwegian raider Sagittarius.

'He goes round here as if he was on a Scalextric set,' said Holland.

'He`s got a lovely long stride and when you`re in front you can dictate it - the others have to do what you want otherwise they`ve got to come wide round you and give away ground.'

Barry Hills improved on his incredible record in the Listed Philip Leverhulme Dee Stakes when Sohaib just got home under the trainer`s son Richard in a thrilling finish to the ten furlongs test.

Sohaib set out to make all, and his rider judged things perfectly coaxing that vital bit extra out of the colt close home to hold on by a short head when it looked as if Epsom Derby hope (33-1 from 40-1 withLadbrokes) Sir George Turner was going to collar him.

Hills senior was saddling his 11th winner of the race and he recalled: 'The first was Golden Monad in, I think, 1971!

'You have got to get the tactics right around here, he has a high cruising speed, he quickened up and he stayed well.'

Sohaib is not in the Derby, and Hills senior went on: 'There is nothing special for him at the moment, but I think we will stick to a mile and a quarter, this seems to suit him.'
