Perry Mason (8/1) credited owner/trainer Maurice Ahern with a second recent success since taking out his licence last July, as the bargain-buy landed Galway's Barna Recycling Handicap under 7lb claimer Julian Pietropaolo.

The four-year-old had landed a big-field Curragh handicap at odds of 25/1 last Tuesday under jockeys’ championship-elect Dylan Browne McMonagle and today had little difficulty defying a 6lb rise, when scoring very easily from Manhattan Dandy .

Ahern reported “I had runners in Newcastle the day this horse won at the Curragh last week and this is great.

“I loved the look of him at the sales, where he was a cheap horse (3,500gns) and he has rewarded us now. He had a good run in a maiden last year, is a lovely stamp of a horse and has schooled over hurdles. Soft ground is key and he’ll go jumping now.”

He added “I’m based two minutes from the point-to-point field in Dromahane (Cork) and was training in pony racing all my life. Previously I had been in RACE and rode as an amateur too.

“I’m lucky with the owners I have and I’m looking to get some backing now. I got my licence in July and trained 400 winners in pony racing, including a Dingle Derby win.

“We have a yard built at home, have a Wexford sand gallop and there are plenty of gallops around me.”
