Pier Pressure repeated his success of last year when staying on well inside the final furlong to land the Bolands Mazda Carlow Handicap at Gowran Park.

Nicola Burns had the Ger Lyons trained gelding up with the leaders throughout. Ridden over two-furlongs out, the 13/8f moved fourth on the outer a furlong from home.

Coming through to lead inside the final furlong, the five-year-old stayed on well to beat Nyman by half-a-length.

“It’s no more than he deserves as he’s a pound lower than he was 13 starts ago,” said Lyons.

“He runs his races. I gave him to Nicola earlier in the year and said to her that she’d get the hang of him along the line and have your win out of him.

“He has ability but he needs a chance and he needed every bit of the 7lb to come off him to do that.

“She gets his head in front and he decides he’ll throw her at the road! You can’t win with him.

“He stays on the team and he does that job. As along as he keeps doing that he’s worth having.

“I think it’s all about Nicola, a ride like that, because he’s not easy.”
