Pineau in veterans chase contention Pineau De Re will attempt to break the Grand National hoodoo that stretches back to 2003 in the 188Bet.co.uk Veterans' Handicap Chase at Sandown on Sunday. No horse has won again after taking the Aintree spectacle since Bindaree claimed the Welsh National 12 years ago, but Pineau De Re's trainer Dr Richard Newland is intent on proving the statistic can be broken. The 2014 Aintree hero shaped better than he has for a long time at Chepstow on his reappearance, and Newland expects him to go very close. "I hope he'll have a realistic chance," said the Worcestershire handler. "What he needs to do is prove to us he still has the desire to want to go and win a race. "I thought he ran a nice enough race at Chepstow, he just blew up at the second-last. "We were very pleased, it was in no way as bad as it could have been. "He'll be much better suited going right-handed at Sandown and I'd be very hopeful that he could be competitive. "I really hope to bury the statistic that no National winner has won another race for so long." Roalco Des Farges, 2013 Welsh National winner Mountainous and Vino Griego also line up.
